First and second-year law students are encouraged to apply for Summer Associate positions at the Rocky Mountain Children's Law Center. Our Summer Associate Program is designed to expose committed and talented public interest law students to all aspects of legal advocacy for maltreated children. Past volunteer or career-related experience in this area is useful, but not essential.
Associates will be responsible for various legal research and writing assignments, as dictated by the needs of the Children’s Law Center’s attorneys. Associates will have a weekly opportunity to attend court and observe a variety of legal proceedings. Other opportunities may include assisting in witness and trial preparation, or accompanying attorneys on home visits or interviews of child clients. Second-year law students may have the ability to speak in court on behalf of a child.
Students applying for a Summer Associate position should send a cover letter expressing their interest, a current resume, and a writing sample. Qualified applicants will then be selected to begin the interview process. Applicants are encouraged to examine other parts of the Children's Law Center's website so that they have a full understanding of our mission and needs.
The Summer Associate Program runs from roughly mid-May through mid-August, depending on the student's class schedule. Associates typically work 40 hours a week. The Law Center does not offer compensation for its internships, so students are encouraged to apply for any summer stipends and fellowship grants offered by their schools or other associations.
The application deadline for the 2010 Summer Associate Program is March 12, 2010. We will consider applications submitted between early January and the deadline, and will generally notify accepted Associates by the end of March.
