THE SUMMER ASSOCIATE PROGRAM First- and second-year law students are encouraged to apply for Summer Associate positions at the Rocky Mountain Children's Law Center. Our Summer Associate Program is designed to expose committed and talented public interest law students to all aspects of legal advocacy for maltreated children. Past volunteer or career-related experience in this area is useful, but not essential. Each Associate is assigned to one staff attorney and may work on a variety of legal activities, such as: assisting in witness and trial preparation; doing home visits and interviews of child clients; participating in an agency review of a foster child's case; drafting motions; fact investigations; legal research and writing; and attending or speaking in court on behalf of a child. Students applying for a Summer Associate position should send: a cover letter expressing their interest; current resume; writing sample; and most recent law school transcript. Although in-person interviews are preferable, we can also do telephone interviews, as needed. Candidates are encouraged to examine other parts of the Children's Law Center's website, so that they have a full understanding of our mission and needs. The Summer Associate Program runs from roughly mid-May through mid-August, depending on the student's class schedule. Associates work 40 hours a week. The Law Center does not offer compensation for its internships, so students are encouraged to apply for any summer stipends and fellowship grants offered by their school, or other associations. We consider applications submitted between early January and mid-March, and generally notify accepted summer associates by mid-March, or sooner.
