TRAINING MANUALS AVAILABLE FROM THE CHILDREN'S LAW CENTER

The Children's Law Center currently has three training manuals available to members of the public. One is geared toward teaching foster parents how to use the court system to enforce foster children's rights. Another is a reference guide for attorneys who want to participate in our Pro Bono Attorney Program as child advocates. The third is for pro bono attorneys interested in representing children in domestic violence cases.

  • Advocacy for Children by Foster Parents is a comprehensive training manual prepared by the Children's Law Center for foster parents who attend our Foster Parent Training seminars. This is a detailed but straight-forward legal discussion on how foster parents can intervene in the courts to uphold children's rights, when they are denied the services to which they are entitled.

Topics include: how the juvenile court system works; how to intervene in court on behalf of foster children; what kinds of benefits can be obtained for foster children through the courts; how to keep good documentation on a child; foster parent liability issues; what happens during an investigation of abuse allegations; and how to file a grievance in the social services system.

Foster parents unable to attend a training session can order a manual directly from the Children's Law Center by calling our main office number. The nominal fee for the manual is $25, which covers preparation, printing, and shipping costs.

  • Pro Bono Attorney Training Manual -- A revised pro bono attorney training and reference manual is under development. Topics include: how to independently assess an at-risk child's well-being; how to advocate vigorously for that child's best interests; how to navigate the juvenile courts; pertinent Colorado Children's Code and Federal child protection laws; and ethical considerations in representing maltreated children.

Attorneys who want to learn more about children's legal advocacy, outside of our Pro Bono Attorney Program, can order a training manual directly from the Children's Law Center by calling our main office number. The nominal fee for the manual is $30, which covers preparation, printing, and shipping costs.

  • Representing Children in Domestic Violence Cases: A Training Manual for Attorneys -- This training manual includes: an introduction to the dynamics, symptoms and prevalence of family violence; a discussion on how to investigate domestic violence and how to formulate protective orders for at-risk children; sample forms; sample reports; and pertinent State statutes.

Attorneys who want to learn more about representing children who live with domestic violence, outside of our Pro Bono Attorney training program, can order a manual directly from the Children's Law Center by calling our main office number. The nominal fee for the manual is $30, which covers preparation, printing, and shipping costs.
