When he was two years old, Garrett’s abusive father took him away from his mother and moved to Texas, where he soon ended up in the foster care system. After he was returned to his father, they moved to Colorado. However, his father once again abused him, and Garrett ended up in Colorado’s foster care system. That is when we were appointed to be his guardian ad litem. Although Garrett desperately wants a family, his father refuses to take his calls and has not seen his son in months.
Garrett, now 16, had not seen his mother since he was two years old. His father lied to him, telling him his mother did not want him. However, his mother—now living in Michigan—had been searching for him for years. She finally found him on Facebook earlier this year. They started talking back a forth and decided to meet. However, there was no money for a trip.
We want to thank Quality Inn Central Denver for donating 7 nights lodging, and the local county social services department for providing travel assistance for Garrett’s mother and half-sister to Colorado during a week-long holiday visit in December. Garrett was able to spend the week getting to know his Mom and half-sister, whom he didn't even know existed. It was an emotional beginning that has continued over the phone and email. This month, the family will reunites once again over spring break. Foster children often grow up feeling unwanted and unloved. At least for Garrett, we were able to change his story.
